Natalie Shovlin-Bankole, M.D. is a current Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) resident at the bustling Magee Women’s Hospital at the University of Pittsburgh. She graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology. She then took a gap year to serve with Nationalities Services Center where she coordinated medical care for newly arrived refugees and asylum seekers by building and fostering relationships with the surrounding medical community in Philadelphia, PA. She then went on to complete her Doctor of Medicine M.D. from Chicago Medical School. While in medical school, Natalie began to foster her passion for inter-professionalism within birthwork by shadowing home birth providers in Southern California.

Natalie’s passion for caring for birthing people and people with (and without) uteruses began in childhood, when she found herself captivated by the subtlety and precision of the menstrual cycle and birth. Fast forward several years and many years of studying later, Natalie is committed to upholding the highest standards of respect and support for birthing people. She envisions a future where interprofesisonal teams of birth workers (midwives, doulas, nurses and physicians) work harmoniously towards the comprehensive care of their client. As a member of cohort 7 of BWOCC doula training, she is excited to serve as a member of the BWOCC Board of Directors.
